One of the techniques some movers may use to get you to use their service when you call is: They can quote you a reasonable or even a very low price (get it in writing) and offer free service like free boxes, tape, packing material, etc, and they would also tell you, you get free quilted blankets to cover your furniture, but they have to cover all or most of your stuff with quilted blanket anyway, or they would end up with a lot of scratched or damaged furniture. If you end up with or keep any free blankets or material after the move you can be sure you paid for that with some other charges. Also if you ask for a specific day to move, they may tell you the day you want is available right now but could be filled up at anytime especially if it’s a day close to the end of the month or a weekend. This may encourage you to book (only if you are ready) your move right away before you loose that day. Book or set up your move day as early as possible (if you can) to get the exact day you want and call to confirm your date a couple days before you move especially in the busy summer months to avoid any problems. This is something movers listen for when you call them: They want to hear you are ready to move, not necessary checking prices, so they can setup or book your move, they also want to hear you have all the information about your move (from where, to where, items involved, and move conditions, steps, elevator, etc). They don’t necessarily want to hear you are a second or third party individual just checking prices for someone else, because you can’t book or setup the move at that moment it may become to confusing and this could cost you more on move day. However if you are just checking prices, they (movers office) may not be able to spend as much time with you on the phone after they give you a price, they may have other customers to attend to, and that’s understandable. Be ready with all your information about your move and try to keep a note of each mover service (see free Movers Information List), how they charge, and when payment is due. One of the ways you can end up paying more for your move is: Not disclosing everything about your move to the movers. Example; extra stop to pickup or drop off items, even the place you are moving from or to may be difficult. Example; a long walk to or from your place, lots of steps, narrow doorway or corridor, even a small elevator, these are things that could cost you more on move day. If you forgot or did not mention a certain situation or item or furniture because you think it would cost you more, it would cost you more, it’s just that you would not know how much until move day, disclose everything you can think of about your move to avoid surprise charges on move day. The best time to move as far as price or cost is concerned would be in the slower months of September to April, movers might be more willing to work with you as business slows up around this time. Also if you can be flexible with your move date (pick up and drop off) that may help, weekends and month ends are usually busier and could cost more than mid week and the middle of the month year round. The best time to move as far as the weather conditions are concerned would be the summer months (May to August) during daylight hours. However summer months are usually busier and more costly to move. Start your move as early as possible 7, 8, or 9 o clock if possible. If you have a large move 3 or 4 bedroom house or apartment, or a medium size move 3 bedroom or smaller, you may want to start as early as possible, some movers may not start that early, but you should know when you book or setup your move.
